Powder eyebrows are a great permanent makeup option for those looking to achieve naturally shaped and pigmented eyebrows that are long-lasting, eliminating the need to apply makeup to the eyebrows following treatment.
How long does it take for powder brows to look normal?
For most patients, the healing period for powder brows will take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks, varying depending on the skin type of the patient, with the patient only needing to continue an aftercare routine for about 10 days following the treatment to ensure that the eyebrows turn out as good as possible. It is very common for the eyebrows and the pigment that has been added to the eyebrows to appear to be a bit darker and less natural during these first few days of healing, often causing patients to feel a bit worried about the initial dramatic appearance of their eyebrows. For most patients, the eyebrows will look much more natural and normal around 10 days following the treatment and will continue to gradually fade over a few weeks.
When can I get water on my powder brows?
There are a few aftercare instructions that will be provided following a powder brow treatment, including having to avoid submerging the eyebrows in water. It is important that the treated areas are kept clean and dry, and wiped free of extra lymph pigment, but the patient will need to still be very gentle with their eyebrows and avoid rubbing them while they are still healing. Patients can shower following their appointment, just take caution to avoid getting the brows wet in the shower and not letting the water run down their face. Most powder brow providers will recommend that they avoid letting the treated eyebrows get wet for a few days following the treatment but should be wiping them with a clean cotton pad that has been dampened with sterile water multiple times daily during these first few days to keep them clean.
What should I avoid after powder brows?
Most of the aftercare involved with powder brows involves avoiding quite a few things, particularly within the first 10 days following treatment, to allow the eyebrows to heal properly. One of the most important things to avoid is exposure to direct sunlight, including tanning beds and having the eyebrows covered with a hat or sunglasses whenever going outside for at least 4 weeks following the procedure. It is also very important that patients avoid picking or scratching at the eyebrows while they heal as it is common that the eyebrows will start to peel or develop some scabbing as picking at the skin can lead to scarring and a loss of pigment. Other activities and situations that should be avoided while the powder brows are still healing include:
• Swimming, going in a hot tub, taking hot showers or baths, and using a sauna or steam room for at least 3 weeks;
• Strenuous physical activities or sweating, including going to the gym, going outside in hot weather, or any other physical effort that results in sweating can cause the eyebrows to expel pigment for 10 days;
• Sleeping on their face or brows for at least 10 days;
• Wearing makeup or skincare products unless otherwise recommended by the powder brow specialist for 10 days; and
• Receiving facial treatments, including laser treatments, microneedling, microdermabrasion, or Botox injections for at least 4 weeks.
The powder brow provider will likely also recommend that patients avoid treatments involving Retin-A or chemical peels around or near the eyebrow area even after the brows have fully healed.
What are the stages of the powder brow healing process?
Most patients will undergo the same stages of healing for powder brows within the first 4 to 6 weeks following the treatments, typically going as follows:
• Stage 1 (Days 1 to 4 of healing): The eyebrows will be red and likely a bit swollen, with darker pigmentation from the treatment.
• Stage 2 (Days 5 to 7): The eyebrows will start to scab and will likely become itchy.
• Stage 3 (Days 8 to 10): The pigment will fade a bit, with the eyebrows appearing as much lighter and also perhaps a bit patchy in pigment as they continue to heal.
• Stage 4 (Around 4 weeks): The pigment will return, revealing an even, powdered appearance as the eyebrows are almost entirely healed.
• Stage 5 (4 to 6 weeks): Touch-ups will be completed at this time for any areas in the eyebrows that are uneven and to achieve the final desired appearance.
• Stage 6 (after 6 weeks): The eyebrows have fully healed from both the initial treatment and the touch-ups, only requiring maintenance treatments every 1 to 3 years.
